SCENE:
Spanish seafront. Day.

Curtain. Stage is empty. Enter Menzies, strolling. Perhaps muttering an early draft of some speech. Menzies trips over.

Menzies: Oh!

Enter Grenville with a notepad and pen. She trips over Menzies.

Grenville: Oh, damn, Menzies!

Menzies stands up. Goes to leave but trips over Grenville.

Menzies: Oh! Grenville!

Grenville stands up. Goes to leave but trips over Menzies.

Grenville: D'oh! Again!

Menzies stands up and trips over Grenville.

Menzies: Oh! Curse you authors!

Grenville stands up and trips over Menzies.

Grenville: Damn! Menzies.

Menzies stands up and trips over Grenville.

Menzies: Grenville!

Grenville stands up and trips over Menzies.

Grenville: Bugger!

Curtain falls as both are on the ground.

Menzies: (off) Grenville!

Grenville: (off) Menzies!

Meva: (sheepishly) I've never really understood absurdist theatre. But I guess that's the point.

Exit Meva as she metamorphoses into a rhinoceros.

Meva: (off) Harpo!

No point, really. Certainly no profound meaning: I just felt like some surrealism. I rather thought it was funny.

Except as I recall it was REAGAN who tripped walking up the beaches at Normandy, and then asked the news crews assembled there to film the event if he could "have another take".

I always thought that "menzies" and "damn" were interchangeable, making "Damn! Menzies!" a tautology....
